Canada is still undefeated, but they have shown that the group stage is more of a preparation for the playoffs. After the draw with Austria, they had a little trouble with Norway, but in the end they celebrated the win and are still the favourites to win the group.
Canada showed in the last game how much it cares about the World Cup. In the game against Austria, they were up 6-1 and it seemed like a debacle was on the cards. But it didn’t happen, and our neighbours’ country drew level at 6:6. Canada eventually took two points after winning in overtime, but took a big hit on social media.
Norway, on the other hand, managed their first win of the tournament in the previous game, beating Denmark 2: 0. Great Britain is still the favourite to be relegated, but they do not have a point.
The outsider Norway had the first chance when Eirik Salsten escaped towards the goal, found a free Emilio Pettersen and he let his fans down in a great chance.
The Norwegians could have cashed in two minutes later, but Dylan Guenther’s shot only ended up on the crossbar. The opening goal came at 11:50 when 22-year-old Kaiden Guhle found Brandon Tanev in front of the net and he put the puck in the net.
Late in the period, Ridley Greig broke free on a shorthanded shot from the Norwegian goalie, but it wasn’t accurate. Canada took a two-goal lead two minutes into the second period, with Andrew Mangiapane being the lucky scorer this time.
He skated his pass and then tapped the puck into the empty net. Canada was not chasing a bigger goal difference and looked fearsome. Jared McCann’s shot from Jack McBain missed the empty net.
Canada had another great chance at the start of the third period, but Norway was able to cut it shortly after. After some poor defending by Canada, a power play, Salsten found a free Stian Solberg and he fired his country’s hopes of a point.
They then got a power play after Conor Bedard was sent off, but instead of an equalizer, Canada’s goal came. Dylan Cozens took advantage of a defensive mistake, taking a 2v1 power play where he could have chosen to pass or shoot and ended up heading the puck right under the crossbar.
But Norway didn’t give up and kept fighting. With five minutes to go, the players were slowly enjoying their second goal, but goalie Nico Daws was able to intervene in time before the puck crossed the line.
The Norwegians had to call off the goalie at the end and try to make something of the game, but nothing came of it. With a minute and a half to go, McCann made it 4:1. Canada leads the group with 11 points ahead of Switzerland.
