Canadian fans described the last phase of the game as absolutely embarrassing, when their players let Austria score five goals. Some even cheered for their opponents. The former forward of the Brno Komets shone in the Austrian jersey.

For two periods, it looked like a clear-cut affair for the superfavorite from Canada. But the Austrians managed to make up the five-goal deficit with 49 seconds left in regulation time and send the game to overtime with a score of 6: 6.

Although the time was quickly decided by captain Tavares, it was still one of the most valuable points ever scored at the World Championships for our southern neighbours. Peter Schneider, former player of Kometa Brno, helped with two goals and an assist.

“First of all, we can’t let our opponents score so much, we have to work on that. But on the other hand, it’s nice when you manage to score some goals, it gives the boys confidence. It’s allabout simple play,” Schneider told Czech Television.

Outsider takes on the favourite

Logically, neither the players nor the Canadian fans could be satisfied with the result and especially the play in the last 20 minutes. They did not admit any problems before the duel with the clear outsider. The game was one big sobering up.

“It was an absolutely embarrassing third period. I still believe one hundred percent that this team will be out in the quarterfinals. I’m not sure if this team was put together right at all,” mentioned, for example, social network X user James Hughes.

However, there were some Canadian fans in the online space who actually wished their opponent some success. After all, the story of an underdog taking on a clearly stronger opponent does drag.

“I’m glad we won, but I’m not going to lie, I was rooting for Austria a little bit. I love it when the underdog can come back into the game,” wrote user Dayle, for example, noting that it was only the second time in history that Austria had earned a draw against Canada.
