An unexpected fourth UFC showdown? Volkanovski talks about a possible fight with Holloway and his motivation to go for it
It seemed their fourth battle would never be. Alexander Volkanovski managed to beat Max Holloway three times. The loser became the imaginary gatekeeper. But he recently won the BMF title and that’s something that could help to measure their strength.
It already seemed that their fourth battle would never be. Alexander Volkanovski managed to beat Max Holloway three times. The loser became the imaginary gatekeeper. But he recently won the BMF title, and that’s something that could help their next showdown.
It was July 2022 when Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, undoubtedly two of the best fighters of all time at least at their weight, met for the third and final time in the cage as opponents.
The Australian dominated all three fights on points. However, the second one in particular was very controversial in terms of results, with many experts and fans seeing the Hawaiian sympathizer winning.
Three fights, three identical results. There was basically no reason for the fourth fight. Max had become an imaginary “gatekeeper”, checking out potential challengers. Alexander, for a change, was so dominant that no one believed that anyone could dethrone him.
However, Volkanovski took a step towards new challenges, moving up to lightweight twice, challenging Islam Makhachev. He narrowly lost on points once, was stopped the second time, but took the fight on short notice and spoke of mental problems afterwards.
To make matters worse, he was sensationally dethroned in February when he was knocked out by Ilia Topuria. The situation in the division has changed considerably. In addition, Holloway sensationally finished Justin Gaethje at the UFC 300 gala in the last second of the bout. He’s now in a position to ask for virtually anything. He also holds the BMF title.
Unsurprisingly, Holloway is eyeing the featherweight title as well. Topuria isn’t looking too good about it though. What about a fourth fight with Alexander? The Aussie finally seems to be open to it.
Will we see a fourth Volkanovski vs Holloway fight?
They’ve been rivals for a long time, but when Max Holloway grounded Justin Gaethje, Alexander Volkanovski celebrated in front of the TV screen. Now he’d like to get his hands on the BMF title himself. At least that’s what he revealed according to MMA Junkie.
“Would I fight Max? I think we could do it now that he holds the BMF title. I’ve always sat back and wondered how we could make that fourth fight. But maybe there’s something to this one,” the Australian expressed.
“It’s 3-0 for me. How would you get out of bed for another fight? But the BMF title is something I haven’t had yet. Maybe we can do it. We’ll see what happens,” Volkanovski added.
