Liverpool may well have lost the title in the derby with Everton, with fans jeering in chorus
The Everton-Liverpool derby offered an interesting clash between two rivals from the same city, which ended with a surprising result. Three points were enjoyed at Goodison Park, while quite possibly depriving their rival of the title. And the fans in the stands duly enjoyed it.
The Everton vs Liverpool derby had a clear favourite, but Liverpool paid the price for their poor finishing. In the 8th minute it could have been bad, but the referee, after consulting the video, waived off the penalty for the home side.
Alisson wasn’t bored at the start of the game, he made some excellent saves and Liverpool could be thankful they hadn’t lost yet. However, in the 27th minute, they had already cashed in when Jarrad Branthwaite was in the right place to beat Alisson from a set piece.
Liverpool raced for an equaliser, but chances from Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz both failed to find the net, despite being from promising opportunities. And as it happens, if you don’t give, you get. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored Everton’s second goal after a corner kick.
Diaz then hit the same, and in the end Pickford dealt with a Harvey Eliott chance to give Everton a valuable three points, and their lead over relegated Luton is now eight points, almost out of reach.
Everton fans have been jeering
Liverpool are second after this defeat, three points behind Arsenal and a point behind Manchester City. But the Citizens have two games to play and if they win both, the lead over Liverpool will be five points.
And that will be hard for coach Jürgen Klopp’s squad to make up. “You lost the league at Goodison Park.”
