First Liverpool unexpectedly struggled at home against last-place Sheffield, scoring the winning goal in the 77th minute. Alexis Mac Allister was the hero in the 3-1 win, with Darvin Nunez scoring the Reds’ opening goal.

James McAtee had a chance in the first minute, but the visiting midfielder was well saved by the Liverpool goalkeeper. At the other end, winger Mohamed Salah tried his luck, but goalkeeper Ivo Grbic was able to intervene.

Sheffield were fairly contained in the 17th minute but Darwin Núñez had too easy a job, only hitting the half-empty net. Conor Bradley continued the Reds’ activity, but the far-back missed the space between the three posts.

Then defensive all-rounder Joe Gomez, who hasn’t scored in adult football, shot and it showed – he didn’t hit the net at all. Neither did Alexis Mac Allister, who, after a pass from Luis Diaz, just missed the target.

Dominik Szoboszlai had another shot before the end of the first half, but the Hungarian midfielder only tested goalkeeper Grbic. Despite Liverpool’s dominance, they went into the box with a slender 1:0 lead.

The home side’s dominance continued, Gomez missed the target from distance, Salah was saved by Grbic for a change. In the 59th minute Anfield went silent out of nowhere, Gustavo Hamer was lucky to get through after a centre at the back post with the help of Bradley’s run.

Six minutes later, Virgil van Dijk could have given Liverpool the lead back, but the Serbian goalkeeper again showed his quality. In the 77th minute, Mac Allister got on the end of a long ball from distance and swept the right post with a superb shot.

The Argentine then hit the crossbar, but he didn’t have to regret it, because Cody Gakpo scored in stoppage time. Liverpool return to the top of the table, while the visitors remain hopelessly last.
