A battle between a soon-to-be former Reds manager and a possible future coach? Liverpool take on Brighton on Sunday afternoon, plus two great coaches in Jürgen Klopp and Roberto De Zerbi. However, the Italian strategist faced questions about his future before the duel and he surprised with the answer.
Liverpool take on Brighton on Sunday afternoon and will be fighting for the top spot in the Premier League. If Arsenal and Manchester City‘ s match ends in a draw and the home side win at Anfield, they will move to the top of the league table.
Jürgen Klopp is leading the Reds in his final season and will leave Anfield in the summer. He understandably wants to finish on a high, meaning with as many trophies as possible. Who will replace him is not yet certain. There has been speculation about Xabi Alonso, but he will link his future with Leverkusen for another year.
Klopp himself is sympathetic. But what will Liverpool do? There are still several options in play. One of them is the arrival of the Brighton coach, who is none other than Roberto De Zerbi.
The Italian strategist is doing a great job with the Seagulls. With a limited budget and a not-so-stellar squad, he can entertain the fans with attractive football, but also with decent results. He also manages the eventual departures of his best players.
No wonder Pep Guardiola himself has words of praise for him. The Italian has been linked with several major clubs. So far, he has been loyal to the south of England. But that could soon change.
Will Roberto De Zerbi leave Brighton in the summer?
While Roberto De Zerbi is under contract at Brighton until the summer of 2026, there is already talk about whether he will sign a new one. The subject was even broached before the Liverpool game and the Italian didn’t seem to have impressed Seagulls fans with his answer.
“I haven’t decided my future yet. I have a contract and before I decide I want to speak to the Brighton owner to hear his plan and understand it. Then we will make a decision together,” he told Sky Sports.
“I want to keep my ambition and motivation in the future. I live football 24 hours a day, so I need to know what the plan is, what the project is and what the future is. If I didn’t feel good, didn’t feel the right motivation, I couldn’t stay here,” he added.
So it’s possible that Roberto De Zerbi is already creating an imaginary backdoor. Liverpool fans certainly wouldn’t mind his arrival.
