No Liverpool, no Bayern. Quite possibly one of the best coaches of today has decided to stay at Leverkusen. However, there has been more than enough speculation, especially after Jürgen Klopp (Liverpool) and Thomas Tuchel (Bayern) announced their departure at the end of this season.
Neither of these rumours will prove to be true though, leaving both clubs to look elsewhere for replacements for their current pilots.
For Leverkusen, the Spanish coach’s staying on is understandably extremely important. Xabi Alonso is doing an absolutely phenomenal job with Bayer.
The current Bundesliga season is a shining example of this. After 26 games, Leverkusen lead the table of the German top flight by ten points ahead of their main rivals, Bayern. The club is clearly heading for its first ever title.
On Saturday, 30 March, they must take the next step when they welcome Hoffenheim to their home ground at 15:30. However, Arthur, Palacios and most likely Victor Boniface will not be available yet.
Xabi Alonso on staying at Leverkusen
“There was a lot of speculation about my future, but during the national break I decided to stay and continue at Leverkusen. We had a very good meeting with the club management and I feel I am in the right place. At a club where I can develop as a coach,” said the Leverkusen coach at a press conference.
“My work is not over here. I want to help the club and the players develop. Everything is fantastic here. I am still a young coach and this decision is the best for my future. I am sure of that. I have also informed the players in the cabin. We are moving forward together, ” Alonso continued.
The 42-year-old Spaniard did not want to comment further on speculation about a potential move to Liverpool or Bayern. He noted that he has strong links with those clubs, but at the moment is simply where he wants to be.
