Will there be more departures from Europe in the summer transfer window? According to the latest reports, Olivier Giroud, whose contract with AC Milan expires at the end of the season, could head to the American competition. Although the Frenchman prefers the option of staying at the San Siro…
Olivier Giroud arrived at AC Milan in July 2021, from Chelsea London for just under €3 million. For AC, it was a purchase that can certainly be interpreted as very profitable indeed.
Already in his first year in an AC jersey, he scored 11 goals in 29 league games, adding four assists. He scored three more goals in the domestic cup. But stats are one thing, Giroud was ultimately an absolutely indispensable player for AC.
In the 2021/22 season, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as AC’s big offensive star, missed 20 games due to injury. And it was Giroud who took on the role of the team’s driving force. The collaboration of the French national team’s all-time top scorer with Rafael Leão played a significant role in winning the title.
Last season, Giroud added 13 league goals and also scored five times in the Champions League, in which the Rossoneri reached the final. However, from an individual point of view, he is having his best season right now, at the age of 37.
He has already scored 12 goals in 26 Serie A games and assisted 8 more. He is a leader on the pitch and in the locker room. And the younger players can learn from him and take example from him.
But the fact remains that Giroud’s contract at Milan expires at the end of this season. According to reports from ESPN, the experienced Frenchman would like to stay at the San Siro. However, if AC does not offer him a contract extension, he is not opposed to a move to the MLS.
Giroud as a big name for MLS
In that case, Giroud would like to join one of the big MLS clubs and follow the path taken by his former French teammate Hugo Lloris, who moved to LAFC in December.
He would undoubtedly be a big name for the American competition. The native of the city of Chambéry, in addition to AC Milan, has also played for Chelsea or Arsenal. He has won the Italian title with AC, the Champions League, the Europa League and the FA Cup with Chelsea, which he also won three times with Arsenal.
With 56 goals, he is historically the top scorer of the French national team, with whom he won the 2018 World Cup.
