Edmonton forward Zach Hyman confirmed his position as the second-leading scorer of the season with a hat trick. His hat trick was spread between the second and third period and was enough for less than 8 minutes of net time, thus contributing to the demolition of Washington (7:2).
Edmonton asserted its dominance on home ice
Edmonton confirmed that it is playing very well at home this season. Washington goaltender Darcy Kuemper eventually walked away with seven goals, with the Oilers’ top three being Leon Draisatl, Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman.
That trio combined for 10 points. The game was tied only during the first period, which Edmonton won 3:2.
Kuemper cashed in from Draisatl, McDavid and Hyman. On the Capitals’ side, Ivan Miroshnichenko, who scored only his second NHL goal, and Connor McMichael joined the scorers’ list.
Zach Hyman had a hat trick
From the second period on, the Oilers clearly took over the game. Hyman struck twice in the second period. Although the third goal was not credited to Hyman until after the end of the third period, as he was originally taken as the goal scorer by Evan Bouchard.
Edmonton fans appreciated this by belatedly throwing their caps on the ice. This gives him 46 goals in his stats and he is clearly the second leading scorer this season. He can continue to think boldly about breaking the 50-goal mark.
In the third period, Edmonton added two more goals when a desperate Kuemper cashed in off the sticks of Warren Foegele and Connor Brown. Brown scored his first goal in 72 games, and last enjoyed an accurate shot on March 24, 2022.
Oilers captain McDavid had one hit and two assists in the game, pushing his home point streak to 26 games in a row. He has already improved to 106 points in Canadian scoring. Just one point behind second man in scoring Nikita Kucherov and nine points behind productivity leader Nathan MacKinnon.
The German Draisatl even recorded four points on a goal and three assists. Bringing his season total to 85 points on the season and moving him into eighth place in the Canadian scoring.
Captain Alexander Ovechkin, who has 18 goals so far this season and is still 54 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s scoring record with 840 goals in the regular season, also scored an assist for the Capitals.
