Half an hour of conquest, then the breaking of the Roman wall. Bayern Munich pulled off a first-half one-goal deficit in the Champions League eight-final against Lazio and would have advanced at half-time 2-0. Harry Kane and Thomas Müller took the lead.
Bayern must win by two goals
Lazio were very committed from the opening minutes, the goalkeeper had virtually no work to do as all the shots were knocked down by the stoppers. Especially Spaniard Mario Gila was very active in this respect, the most important block he scored against Jamal Musial.
Bayern were not successful in standard situations. In the 32nd minute the fans were at least amused by the slipping of referee Slavko Vincic, who unintentionally stopped Bayern’s chance.
In the 39th minute, the Allianz Arena could have rejoiced as Harry Kane headed the ball into the net from the edge of the box. Just a minute later, Musiala could have struck too. But he narrowly missed the back post from just outside the box.
And in the second minute, Matthijs de Ligt sent a great volley to the back post, which was then headed home by Thomas Müller.
The clash of the struggling giants
Both teams were struggling before the rematch. Bayern and Lazio have lost three of their last five games and neither has had a rehearsal. Bavarians only drew with Freiburg in the Bundesliga and are already ten points behind first-placed Leverkusen.
Bayern were clearly under more pressure, trailing by one goal. And there are constant questions about who will coach them in the new season. In addition, two key Frenchmen were unavailable for the rematch – the injured Kingsley Coman and the sidelined Dayot Upamecano.
Lazio enjoyed a card game last league round, finishing with eight men against AC Milan at the San Siro and going down 0-1 after three red cards. In the opening game against Bayern, on the other hand, it was the Romans who played the power play.
