Patrick Kane beats Mrazek in overtime to clinch the win for Detroit

Patrick Kane played Sunday night against his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks, where he spent 16 seasons. And he was a central figure for the Red Wings. He had a hand in the equalizing goal and decided the game for Detroit in overtime, 2-3.

Kane got a standing ovation

It was the first time Patrick Kane played against his former employer. He spent 16 seasons in Chicago and celebrated the Stanley Cup with the team in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He also won all of his individual trophies there, including the most valuable Hart Trophy. Kane and the Blackhawks parted ways on February 28, 2023 after he was traded to the New York Rangers.

Czech goaltending stalwart Petr Mrazek started in goal for the Blackhawks and James Reimer started in goal for the Red Wings. Detroit confirmed its role as the favorite at the end of the first period when Daniel Sprong surpassed Mrazek with his 16th goal of the season.

Chicago turned the game around in the 2nd period

The more active home team tied the game at the beginning of the 2nd period. At 23:29 Reimer scored for the first time in the game off the stick of Mackenzie Entwistle, for whom it was only his 3rd goal of the season.

With less than three minutes left in the period, Chicago struck on the power play, as 36-year-old veteran Nick Foligno scored on a pass from Connor Bedard, his 14th of the season. The Blackhawks turned the game in their favor. Detroit entered the third period much more active.

Patrick Kane’s moment

The shooting activity paid off. In the 56th minute, Petr Mrazek scored for the second time in the game. Alex DeBrincat scored after Shayne Gostisbehere and the home ”darling” Patrick Kane. The game remained unchanged until the end of the period.

In overtime, DeBrincat and Kane switched roles at 61:43. Patrick Kane scored his second point of the game and the game-winning goal. It was his 12th goal of the season and 28th point in 27 games played for the Red Wings.

The game was thus decided with a bit of nostalgia by the player who Chicago made the number one pick in the 2007 draft. For the record, Kane played 1161 regular season games here, scoring 1225 points on 446 goals and 779 assists. He is second in club history in points and assists behind Stan Mikita and third in goals scored.
