Washington beat Montreal after a hard fought game. But Ovechkin won’t extend his impressive streak

Washington scored two very important points against Montreal. Although the home team tied the game three times, the final resistance was broken by Alexei Protas, who set the final score at 3:4 for Washington. Alexander Ovechkin’s successful streak came to an end.

Washington dominated the first period

In goal for the home team was Jake Allen, who made only his 19th save of the season. Darcy Kuemper was in goal for Washington. However, Allen was beaten in the 4th minute by Anthony Mantha, who scored his 17th goal of the season.

Montreal tied the game just 84 seconds later on a goal by Arber Xhekai, who scored only his second career NHL goal.

However, Washington took the lead back in the 10th minute on a power play by T.J. Oshie. It was only the 10th accurate shot this season for the goal scorer with killer instincts.

Alexander Ovechkin scored the point on an assist. Alex Newhook tied the game at the end of the second period. Washington took the lead for the third time in the third period thanks to a goal by forward Sonny Milan.

The Canadiens still didn’t give up. They tied the game one last time on a power play midway through the third period, thanks to the team’s most productive player and scorer Nick Suzuki. However, at 51:57 Capitals forward Alexei Protas set the final score (3:4).

Ovechkin’s streak is over

Alexander Ovechkin scored 1 point in this game for his assist on Oshie’s second goal. It ended his second-longest streak in the NHL when he managed to score in six consecutive games. It was his teammate T.J. Oshie who scored the big goal in the Canadiens-Capitals game. He scored his 300th goal in the regular season.

Oshie became only the third player selected in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft to surpass that mark. Before him, only two players had crossed that mark. The first is Sidney Crosby, who already has 580 goals. The second is Anže Kopitar with 410 goals.

With this important win, Washington is within sight of the playoffs. Now, from 11th place in the conference, they are six points behind the 8th team from Detroit. Whereas Montreal is only 14th in the conference and its gap to the playoff position has already grown to 10 points.
