Barcelona hosted Granada in the 24th round of the Spanish La Liga at the weekend, with the Catalan giant’s players the clear favourites. But in the end, they suffered a 3-3 draw. Coach Xavi is still not throwing in the towel.
Just don’t panic. That wasn’t the only purpose of Xavi’s message at the press conference after the Granada game. In fact, Barcelona suffered another loss in their last match, this time drawing 3-3 and the title fight is slipping away.
The Catalan giant had a good start to the game against Granada, with Lamine Yamal scoring in the 14th minute. However, the visitors managed to equalise before half-time. Ricard Sanchez scored with two minutes to go.
But it got worse in the 61st minute. Myrto Uzuni got the ball in the penalty area to Facundo Pellistri, who made no mistake. Barcelona, however, managed to react very quickly.
Three minutes later, Ilkay Gündogan headed the ball to a free Robert Lewandowski, who coolly dealt with the end line. However, even this didn’t last long, as Ignasi Miquel gave Granada the lead back in the 66th minute.
Barcelona had a big problem, only partially solved by Yamal in the rest of the match. The 16-year-old talent equalised at 3:3 in the 80th minute, but the match ended in a draw.
Xavi and co. thus recorded another loss after losing to Villarreal. Barcelona are currently third in the league table with 51 points. However, they are five points behind second-placed Girona and ten points behind Real.
Xavi after the match against Granada…
“The fight for the title is tough and after today it’s even tougher. We made it more difficult for ourselves by two points. The ten-point gap is big, but not impossible. We’re not going to throw in the towel. We don’t consider La Liga lost,” Xavi said at a press conference, whose words were also quoted by MARCA newspaper.
“We gave our opponents too many chances, which resulted in goals. It’s a shame because it was a good chance to get back into the title game. Instead, we just made things more difficult for ourselves. We need to improve in defence, where we are making mistakes. They are killing us, we are conceding a lot of goals,” Xavi added.
