Who will become the new Liverpool coach? Following the announcement of Jürgen Klopp’s departure, there was understandably an avalanche of speculation, with the British media almost immediately identifying the current Leverkusen coach as the ideal candidate. And according to the latest reports, even Xabi Alonso himself reportedly wants a move to Liverpool.
It was quite a shock for all Liverpool fans when Jürgen Klopp officially announced that he will quit the bench of the famous English club after the season.
So, almost immediately, speculation began about who could replace him at Anfield Road. Several names were subsequently bandied about, who may or may not have been linked with Liverpool in the past.
Most of all, however, everyone was intrigued by the theory of the current Leverkusen coach. According to the British media, Xabi Alonso would be the ideal candidate to become Liverpool’s head coach for several reasons. Moreover, he once worked in the Premier League as a player.
“Xabi Alonso is a personality who could follow Klopp. There may be some concerns about his lack of experience as a coach, but everything he has touched in Germany has turned to gold. A bit like Klopp’s days at Borussia Dortmund,” wrote the British newspaper The Telegraph recently.
“Understandably, speculation is already arising. However, I am concentrating on Bayer Leverkusen. I am very happy with my players at Leverkusen at the moment. But of course, for Liverpool it’s a big surprise. WhatJürgen has done at Liverpool deserves a lot of respect and recognition,” Xabi Alonso countered.
Xabi Alonso to Liverpool?
So, based on earlier statements, the Spanish coach was not thinking of moving to Liverpool. However, former Manchester United and Bayern Munich player Bastian Schweinsteiger has let it be known that the opposite is allegedly true.
“I know him and I am sure his dream is to coach Liverpool. I’m sure Xabi Alonso will leave Leverkusen in the summer,” Schweinsteiger told German television, also quoted by Britain’s Mirror newspaper.
Of course, we will have to wait and see if such rumours are confirmed. It should be added, the forty-two-year-old Spaniard has won the Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup with Liverpool as a player.
