Djokovic loses in the semi-finals for the first time at the Australian Open! The battle for the world number one position is once again even

Novak Djokovic lost in the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. He lost to the young Italian Jannik Sinner after a four-hundredth fight. This hesitation also makes the battle for the world number one more even for the coming months.

If we look at the rankings before the start of the Australian Open, we find that Novak Djokovic had a lead of 2200 points over Carlos Alcaraz. However, in the upcoming edition of the rankings, it will be much less.

The thirty-six year old Serb will not defend last year’s title in Melbourne, having pulled the short end of the rope in the semi-finals. The duel with Jannik Sinner did not go according to the original plan, the Italian won after sets 6:1, 6:2, 6:7 and 6:3. The match lasted almost three and a half hours.

Although Sinner gave a very good performance, a better performance was expected from the Serb. The thirty-six-year-old tennis player produced 54 unforced errors in four sets, which is an extremely high number for him.

“It was a very tough match. I started very well and Djokovic didn’t feel optimal on court for the first two sets, so I tried to push and get the lead. I was also successful in the fourth set. The atmosphere here was great,” said the Italian in his on-court post-match interview.

The 22-year-old Italian will play his maiden Grand Slam final on Sunday. In it, he will play Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and will be the paper favourite.

This result will also make the battle for the world number one more dramatic in the coming weeks and months. Djokovic will now have 9,855 points to his name, with Spain’s Alcaraz 600 points behind.

Should Medvedev win his second Grand Slam title on Sunday, he would move into second place just ahead of Alcaraz. He would be less than 400 points behind Djokovic.
