MacKinnon scores five points to lead NHL scoring, Makar has 300th point in regular season

Colorado forward Nathan MacKinnon scored five points in the game against Philadeplphia, replacing the current scoring leader Nikita Kucherov. His teammate Cale Makar scored his 300th point of the regular season.

MacKinnon was on a rampage for the Flyers

Avalanche forward MacKinnon was on the ice during the Philadelphia Flyers vs. Colorado Avalanche game (4:7). He contributed to a total of five Colorado goals. He scored two goals himself and assisted on three of them with passes to his teammates. With this great performance, he rose to the top of the NHL scoring charts.

Overall, he improved his personal record in 47 games played to 77 points. And that’s from 26 goals scored and 51 assists. He leapfrogged the current scoring leader Nikita Kucherov of Tampa Bay by two points. MacKinnon has shown a very constant performance all season so far.

And once again, he is one of the hot candidates to win the Hart Trophy. He’s made the final three several times in the past. However, he has narrowly missed out on the MVP trophy each time. But this year it could work out, as Connor McDavid is not among the hot favorites this season.

This is the sixth time in Avalanche franchise history that MacKinnon has broken the 50 assists mark in a season. From a historical club perspective, the Quebec/Avalanche already rank 4th in that statistic. Only Joe Sakic (14 times), Peter Fortune (9 times) and Peter Forsberg have done it more than six times.

Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev had 4 goals, but he also had 36 saves. He has already made 26 saves this season and is the best goalie in the league. He is followed by Vancouver goalie Thatcher Demko, who has two fewer saves.

Cale Makar trails Orr

Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar notched one assist on Mikko Rantanen’s second goal of the game. The latter determined the game’s score at (4:6). And he scored his 300th point of the regular season. He reached this milestone in 280 games played in which he recorded 75 goals and 225 assists.

He became the second-fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach that mark. Previously, only legendary defenseman Bobby Orr had accomplished the feat. He needed only one less game to reach the mark. It’s all the more admirable that he’s picking up points at almost the same rate as Orr, who picked up points by the handful in a completely different era.
