Winning the title? It’s not just a dream anymore! Schick talks about Leverkusen’s ambitions and points to a challenging spring season
Bayer Leverkusen are currently leading the German top flight and have not been as close to winning the title as they are in the current season for a long time. And it’s not just that that Czech striker Patrik Schick spoke about in an interview with Kicker magazine.
Bayer Leverkusen are currently leading the German top flight and have not been as close to winning the title as they are in the current season for a long time. And it’s not just that that Czech striker Patrik Schick spoke about in an interview with Kicker magazine.
Fourteen wins, three draws, no losses, 45 points and a positive 47:12 record.
They are currently leading the German top flight and, in addition to a very successful autumn season, they have also made a good start to 2024.
Leverkusen first beat Venezia (Venice – ed.) 4-1 in a friendly, with Adam Hložek scoring twice and Patrik Schick once. The Czech duo was not missing in the starting line-up in the first league match of the year against Augsburg.
It seemed that the two teams would share the points as a result of the scoreless draw, but in the end Exequiel Palacios scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time in the second half. He scored at the last possible chance to give Leverkusen an important three points.
Leverkusen now lead the Bundesliga table with 45 points. Second-placed Bayern are currently four points behind first-placed Bayer, but have one game in hand. Third-placed Stuttgart are looking further afield, with an eleven-point deficit to Leverkusen.
Schick: The title is no longer just a dream
The German side is well on its way to winning the Bundesliga title, although it will be a very long journey. However, in an interview with Kicker magazine, striker Schick spoke about this very topic.
“It’s not just a dream anymore,” says Schick confidently. “We are in a good starting position in all competitions. We are fighting for trophies, but it is difficult to say which is the most realistic for us,” said the Czech goal scorer. He reminded that Leverkusen will fight for the coveted trophy in the league, the domestic cup and the Europa League.
And as for the match against Augsburg? “If you want to play for the title, you have to manage games like that, it was an important win. The Augsburg game was tough and we were patient, created chances and believed until the end.”
“The next four games will be crucial for the development of the season, if we manage them, our position will be even better. We play Leipzig, Gladbach, Darmstadt and then Bayern. Our confidence is growing with every success and is a big problem for our opponents,” Schick concluded.
