Barcelona beat Osasuna 2-0 in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup to claim the trophy. Robert Lewandowski’s goal, followed by the young Lamine Yamal’s goal in stoppage time, decided their progress to the final against Real Madrid.
Barcelona failed to capitalise on the pressure in the first half
Barcelona had the better start to the match. Ferran Torres could have opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but his shot flew just wide of the bar. Robert Lewandowski then made a good finish, but Sergio Herrera made an even better save.
After half an hour of play, the Polish striker scrambled to head home a corner kick. He was stopped from scoring by the left post. On the other side, Ante Budimir showed excellent ball possession, taking the ball all the way to the penalty area, where his run ended in a tackle. The Catalans were saved by Iňaki Peña.
Barcelona put on an offensive display in the first half, but were not successful in finishing. After the opening 45 minutes, the two teams went into the dressing rooms goalless.
Lewandowski decides the final
The Catalan side entered the second half actively again. Ronald Araujo made his presence felt with a header over the crossbar. Then Torres had a shot, but missed.
It was not until the 59th minute that the fans were able to celebrate their first goal. Ilkay Gundogan played in Lewandowski, who was well positioned in the box and, even when falling, was able to head his shot towards the bar.
A few minutes later, Barcelona almost celebrated again. Joao Felix broke free and sent a hard shot towards goal. Herrera, however, reached out and headed it out for a corner. In the 78th minute, Budimir broke through to score, but Peña made a great save. Raul did not even level the score at the end, when he only shot over.
All of Osasuna’s efforts were thwarted in stoppage time by the 16-year-old Lamine Yamal. Joao Felix passed to the youngster and he fired perfectly from the edge of the box. Herrera was not allowed to hit his shot into the bottom corner.
Barcelona are now 2-0 up in the Spanish Super Cup final. They will face Real Madrid. The final is scheduled for Sunday 14 January.
