Vancouver’s on a roll. Not surprisingly, the team is led by the elite Elias Pettersson, J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes. But Czech defenseman Filip Hronek is also doing well.
When he was traded from Detroit in March of this year, he played only 4 games for the Canucks, and then came a serious injury. The first impression might have been a bit embarrassing, but now Hronek is showing what he’s made of.
In 16 games, he has 17 points on 16 assists and 1 goal. He scored his first one in a Canucks jersey last night in a win over the New York Islanders. And it wasn’t just any goal, it was the equalizer in the third period.
The Canucks were down 2-3 at home to the Islanders and had a power play. In the 8th minute of the third period, Hronek shot the puck with tremendous force on goal and burned through everything in his path.
Moreover, Hronek extended his streak with this goal. He has now scored in eleven straight games, equaling the 40-year-old Czech record set by Jiri Bubla, who did the same. Hronek also tied the longest point streak in Canucks history.
Hronek is now the fourth best defenseman in the NHL in overall points. Victor Hedman of Tampa Bay has the same number of points (17), Cale Makar has 21 and defensive pairing partner Quinn Hughes has 26 points.
Hronek is 30th in the NHL in total points. He is the second-best Czech after David Pastrnak, who is fourth with 24 points. The league is dominated by the Canucks trio (Hughes, Pettersson, Miller) who have 26 points.
