Tuesday will be the third day of play at this year’s ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune will face off in Group A. The Danish tennis player is the slight favourite.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has only lifted one trophy this year. In August he won the tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico, where he defeated Alex De Minaur in the final after 6:3 and 6:4 sets.
He was also in great form at the Australian Open in January, where he reached the final. Apart from Jiri Lehecka, he also managed to beat Sinner and Khachanov. In the final, however, he lost to Novak Djokovic in three sets.
He finished the 2023 calendar year in sixth place with 4235 points. In his first match at the ATP Finals in Group A, he was unable to beat the home team’s Sinner, failing to win even one set.
Holger Rune is a 20-year-old tennis player from Denmark. He has also won one tournament this year, which was an event played on clay in Munich in April. In the final against Van De Zandschup he even had to fight off four match points.
His biggest Grand Slam successes came at the French Open and Wimbledon, where he dropped out in the quarter-finals. At this stage of the tournament, Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz were beyond his strength.
The Danish youngster finished eighth with 3460 points and was the last to qualify for this prestigious event. In his debut appearance at the ATP Finals , he succumbed to Djokovic after more than three hours of battle.
In a battle of two opening day losers, I see Holger Rune as a slight favourite. He won both previous duels and I expect him to make the necessary step to advance from the group on Tuesday.
