Today marks exactly twelve years since Mario Balotelli’s legendary celebration after his goal in the Manchester United net. Recall this event and how his career actually went on and where he is now?

Time flies by and I’m sure you’ve had several occasions where you’ve remembered a footballing event and been horrified at how much time has passed since then. Today marks exactly twelve years to the day since the celebration of Mario Balotelli, who, after scoring a goal for Manchester United, rolled up his jersey to reveal the inscription.

The Italian footballer has never stayed away from trouble and has caused a lot of it during his time at Manchester City. The sign referred to the reputation he had earned with journalists and was a response to the fact that at one point the newspapers were constantly full of him.

Mario had an undeniable talent, and although he transferred to England with a reputation as a troubled youngster, he was also one of the most talented footballers. Now we can say that he has remained completely behind all expectations.

Leaving Manchester City

After his departure from Manchester City, he became a great football traveller and changed a total of eight different teams.

Over the years, he has alternated periods of scoring success with those where he just didn’t feel like it and the goals just weren’t there. After returning to Italy, where he donned the AC Milan jersey, he had two successful seasons. He started his career with an impressive twelve goals in thirteen games. He followed this with a season in which he scored eighteen goals.

He followed up his unsuccessful loan spell at Liverpool with a miserable performance in the AC Milan jersey with a move to Nice, France. His first two years there were also successful. Especially the 2018/2019 season, when he scored 26 goals in all competitions.

Subsequently, in three and a half years, he changed three different clubs, starting with Marseille, Brescia, Monza, which at that time played the second Italian league, and Turkish Demirspor.

For half a year he also tried his hand in Switzerland, where he wore the jersey of Sion. This stint ended literally in the style of Mario Balotelli. At a party, according to his words, he accidentally attacked the club’s boss Barthelemy Constantin.

During the match against Servette, he refused to return for the second half with the score 0:3 in Sion’s view, and the fans in the stands burned his jersey. Now, at the age of thirty-three, he has returned to Turkey, where he has once again donned the jersey of his previous employer.
