Karim Benzema has been based in Saudi Arabia since the summer and has been out of sight and out of mind for European fans, but now he is the talk of the town in his native France. The reason? Alleged links to a terrorist organisation.

After 14 long years, the Real Madrid legend has taken on a new challenge. The Lyon product headed to Saudi Arabia this summer, leaving European football for the first time in his career. Specifically, he signed for Al-Ittihad.

Karim Benzema has been responsible for several controversial moments during his career. But what is being discussed around his person now is big news. In fact, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has claimed in an interview with C News that he has links to a terrorist organisation.

Specifically, it is said to be the Muslim Brotherhood, which is seen as a terrorist organisation in several countries. Strangely enough, even in Saudi Arabia, where the French striker is now playing.

According to RMC Sport, Darmanin’s entourage explains this by observing how Benzema’s views are allegedly moving closer and closer to the radical Islam that is typical of the Brotherhood. For example, his refusal to sing the French national anthem was used as an argument.

But then there is French Senator Valérie Boyer, who is still a member of the Republican Party. She, if the words of the interior minister are confirmed, is calling for Benzema to be stripped of his French citizenship and also of the Ballon d’Or he won in 2022.
