American Ben Shelton is one of the most promising representatives of the USA on the tennis courts. He finished off an unexpectedly difficult duel against a home player in a great way and is looking for more opponents at the Tokyo tournament. Who will stand in his way in an extension of his awesome streak?
Ben Shelton has been one of the most watched players on the ATP circuit in recent weeks. His excellent streak began at his home Grand Slam in New York at the end of August.
At the US Open, the twenty-one-year-old made it all the way to the semi-finals, where his journey was ended by Novak Djokovic. At the last Grand Slam of the season he won the scalps of Russian Karacev and compatriot Tiafoe.
Shelton’s journey through the Shanghai tournament last week also went very well. The Atlanta native notched another scintillating victory, getting past Italian Sinner. But in his next match against Korda, Shelton fell in a tight third set.
The bottom line is that he has walked away a winner ten times out of his last twelve matches. By the way, his victory celebration is also worth noting.
The attack on the triumph in Tokyo
China has now been replaced by Japan, where the Asian tennis tour culminates with the “five hundred” in Tokyo. In a well-attended tournament, the left-handed American is among the wider field of favourites.
Among the top-seeded players in Tokyo, we can’t count Nora Ruud or another American, Paul. Shelton has already beaten both of these players this year.
In the first round match the promising American broke a sweat when he defeated the home player Taro Daniel 3:6, 6:4, 7:6. But his final ball was definitely worth it.
Now Shelton will face Australian Thompson, the current number 60 player on the ATP rankings. And like the aforementioned potential rivals, Shelton has already managed one win against him
The American certainly has no shortage of motivation. Although he has already climbed to the second ten of the rankings, he is still missing a tournament title on the ATP circuit. Will he attack it in Tokyo?
In conclusion..
Shelton is definitely one of the favourites in Tokyo. Some tennis experts consider him to be a future Grand Slam winner, after all, he already hinted at his potential at this year’s US Open. In any case, the young American is worth watching closely.
