Wayne Rooney recently returned to his native country. After leading D.C. as a head coach in the American MLS, Rooney has returned to the United States. United, he has now taken over traditional club Birmingham City. The goal is clear, to return him to the elite. In doing so, he has had more financially attractive offers.

He is one of the greatest legends of English football, shining especially in the Manchester United jersey, to which he devoted most of his playing career. However, since the autumn of 2020, Wayne Rooney has been a coach.

He first led Derby County in extremely difficult conditions, where it was almost a heroic engagement. He subsequently went overseas and led D.C. for just over a year. United, where he continued to play at the end of his playing career.

During October, however, Rooney left the United States and chose a new path. He returned to his native England, signing for Birmingham City, a traditional club that once played in the Premier League.

So, at 37, he faces his most ambitious engagement yet as he looks to return Birmingham to the English elite. So far, he has only had difficult engagements in which he could not think too much of success.

“It is obvious that the club has a clear plan and wants to realise its ambitions. We are in agreement with what is expected. I have built my career in difficult conditions to be ready for this kind of opportunity. It’s a project that makes sense to me. We will create a winning culture here with an identity that will stand Blues fans on their feet,” Rooney told the club’s website.

The second top scorer in the history of the English national team could be thinking of fabulous finances. According to L’Équipe, he has received several offers from Saudi Arabia. He turned them all down.

Rooney has a difficult mission ahead of him

So Rooney will not emulate his former national teammate Steven Gerrard. At Birmingham, legends and his former teammates Ashley Cole and John O’Shea will help him fulfil his ambitions.

Understandably, Birmingham would like to move up to the elite as quickly as possible, but it won’t be easy. After eleven rounds played in the second English league, the Blues are 12 points behind the leaders. Leicester dominate the league.

Second-placed Ipswich Town have 10 points more than Rooney’s new team. Birmingham City are currently in sixth position in the Championship, the last position that guarantees a relegation play-off.
