When karma doesn’t apply. Martinez mocked Mbappé after the World Cup, he hasn’t scored since
Karma and sport don’t go together. A fresh exception was Arsenal’s late goal win over Manchester City after Mateo Kovacic was incorrectly sent off. But for another Premier League player, karma seems to have turned its back.
Karma and sport don’t go together. A fresh exception was Arsenal’s late goal win over Manchester City after Mateo Kovacic was incorrectly sent off. But for another Premier League player, goalkeeper Martinez, karma seems to have turned its back.
It is hard to forget Argentina’s celebrations after their historic triumph in Qatar. The final shootout offered six goals, three from Kylian Mbappé, by the way. A penalty shootout decided the match.
The penalty kicks might not have happened at all if Emiliano Martinez had not grabbed Randal Kolo Muani’s chance in the last minute of extra time. Little did he know at the time that he had started a record streak without conceding a goal.
After he saved the winning penalty, he mocked Mbappé numerous times during several days of celebrations. Among other things, he played with a doll with the French star’s face stuck on its head in Buenos Aires.
French fans despised Martinez, but he was clearly only encouraged by this. Since the end of the championship in Qatar, he has played in seven national team games and has not scored once. The overall score is 18:0!
That’s 622 minutes in total, not including setup. This is not a round number, as he was substituted at the end of the friendly against Curacao (7:0). Nevertheless, it is a record among all goalkeepers in Argentina’s history.
Martinez broke Sergio Goycochea’s streak from 1991. “This record is not just mine, it’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of my entire team,” said the hero in a post-match interview. He can add more minutes on Wednesday in Peru.
Martinez seems to have really pleased a lucky man by mocking Mbappé. He’s thriving on the club scene, too. With Aston Villa, he is on the longest unbeaten domestic league streak since 1983, it is already ten games long.
