The third round of the EFL Cup brought a big surprise, but also some beautiful goals
Advancing to the next round of the EFL Cup was not easy for Jürgen Klopp’s charges. But the German strategist shuffled the starting line-up after the change of sides and it was an incredible turnaround full of beautiful goals.
The matches of the third round of the EFL Cup brought one big surprise, when Manchester City failed to confirm their role as the favourites of the whole competition at Newcastle and crashed out at an early stage. However, the other favourites did not falter in yesterday’s duels and one of them was Liverpool.
The Reds welcomed at Anfield Leicester, who are doing everything to get back among the elite after last year’s relegation to the second highest English competition. The Foxes have won seven of their eight league games and are now top of the Championship table.
Leicester showed great form in yesterday’s EFL Cup match as well, shocking Anfield in the third minute thanks to a goal from Kasey McAteer. The score remained unchanged until the end of the first act despite a number of great chances for the home side.
Szoboszlai and Jota took care of the goals of the round
What didn’t go well in the first half went well shortly after the change of sides. The start of the second half was a carbon copy, but this time on the other side. Just three minutes in, Cody Gakpo equalized the score with a beautiful shot off a turn.
Klopp then made a few changes to the line-up after an hour of play, and the arrival of Dominik Szoboszlai in particular proved to be crucial. After five minutes on the pitch, he struck from outside the area and gave goalkeeper Stolarczyk no chance with a beautiful shot that grazed the crossbar.
But that wasn’t all for the Reds. Diogo Jota decided the home team’s victory with a minute left in regulation time, after he took advantage of Jarella Quansah’s pass with an unbelievable finish. More than one user on social media agreed that the beautiful goal seemed to have been cut out of a football video game. A beautiful football moment.
