Argentina won 1-0 against Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier, with Lionel Messi scoring from a direct kick. But he surprised with his post-match interview.

After several friendlies, Argentina played in a competitive match for the first time since winning the World Cup in Qatar. And it remains unbeaten.

In friendlies, it has beaten Panama, Curacao, Australia and Indonesia. This time they opened qualifying with a duel against Ecuador.

Argentina couldn’t make a breakthrough for long and the match was heading towards a draw. But in the 78th minute, Lionel Messi took a direct kick and headed it into the net.

But instead of celebrating on the attack, Messi praised the defensive line after the match for keeping a clean sheet. And one particular stopper in particular.

“I think Cristian Romero is the best defender in the world at the moment. He played brilliantly and in my opinion he was the man of the match,” praised the Tottenham stopper.

“Having him at my back is the best thing that can happen to me. He always makes me go forward because he always wants to play one-on-one against the opposition. I have got used to not looking back and that is very good for an attacking player,” the Albiceleste captain added.

the 25-year-old stopper firmly earned his place in the Spurs starting line-up last season and helped them win the World Cup. He is also doing very well in the new Premier League season and has already made two appearances.
