Two goals on their Cup debut, two in their opening league game. Tomáš Čvančara is enjoying his start in Borussia Mönchengladbach, his two goals on Saturday helped to a 4:4 draw.
Mönchengladbach played Augsburg after only three months, as the two teams played each other in the last round of last season. And the colts were clearly the hungrier side, taking the lead in the 13th minute.
In the 27th minute came Tomas Cvančara’s first moment. He cleared Julian Weigl’s pass with a shot to the near post and gave Mönchengladbach a break. But not for long, two minutes later the home side reduced the deficit to 1: 2.
The half was far from over. Mönchengladbach went back to a two-goal lead in the 37th minute, but Augsburg reduced the lead four minutes later and even equalised in the seventh minute.
The match remained very even, although the second half was not as goalless. But in the 76th minute the home side pulled off a fantastic turnaround, with Ruben Vargas scoring. After that, it seemed like the game was decided, but it wasn’t.
The home team fouled in the penalty area and the referee ordered a penalty kick. Somewhat surprisingly, Čvančara took the ball and the Czech international didn’t hesitate this time either. He chose the left side, the goalkeeper had no chance.
Čvančara thus showed that although he has only kicked one penalty at professional level, Mönchengladbach can rely on him in this respect as well. He also took his second career penalty kick and decorated his Bundesliga debut with two goals.
