Jagr back to Pittsburgh? There’s crazy speculation on the internet
The connection between the NHL hockey club Pittsburgh Penguins and Jaromir Jagr is so familiar that it comes to mind for fans across several generations. As unrealistic as it seems, such a connection could happen again. It will probably happen at some point, at least for a day. Or for an entire season?
The connection between the NHL hockey club Pittsburgh Penguins and Jaromir Jagr is so familiar that it comes to mind for fans across several generations. As unrealistic as it seems, such a connection could happen again. It will probably happen at some point, at least for a day. Or for an entire season?
You know the joke? Dr. Emmett Brown from Back to the Future arrives in a time machine and says to his friend, “Marty! I was in 2033… Jagr is still playing in the NHL!” This joke ran through the internet sometime around 2017 when the greatest Czech hockey legend signed a contract in Calgary. At the time, Jagr was forty-five years old; to date, this is Jagr’s last NHL engagement.
He didn’t even finish the season in a Flames jersey then, but in the spring of 2018, he was already helping the Kladno Knights on their way back to the league. It was somehow clear to everyone that Jaromir Jagr has probably written his last chapter in the NHL as a player.
It’s even crazier that his return to the most famous league in the world is being speculated in 2023, when Jagr is already fifty-one years old. The truth is that the famous sixty-eight-year-old has not yet finished his active career. However, it is not only the Czech public that is wondering whether he still has something to give to the Czech top competition.
Unconfirmed speculations with many question marks
Unofficial American sources have started to spread the information that the thirty-seven-year-old general manager and president of the Penguins Kyle Dubas is in talks with the Czech forward to sign a one-year contract at the league minimum. In that case, it would be a $755,000 per season contract.
According to hockey.cz, some sources are even talking about one million dollars. In addition, Jagr recently spent some time in Pittsburgh. The only news that has hit the airwaves is that he was there to film part of a documentary about the Czech hockey legend made by film director Petr Vetrovsky.
He is a long-time friend of Jagr’s and has made sports documentaries about MMA fighter Attila Végh and football legend Jan Koller. In 2021, they organized an event together in Prague called Night with a Legend. To great success, they repeated the event a year later in Bratislava.
To Pittsburgh for one day.
However, none of the information from overseas media comes from an official source. It is probably just speculation. The question is, why would anyone spread such information? The truth is that imagining Jagr in today’s NHL is almost unrealistic given the progress and speed of the league.
It is far more likely that Jaromir Jagr will be given a one-day contract after his career in Pittsburgh, so that he can take the opportunity to say goodbye to hockey where his great career took off. The event would also include the hanging of his jersey and the retirement of the number 68 in the Penguins organization.
For now, however, Jagr probably hasn’t said the last word in his active hockey career. He is mainly in charge of managerial matters in Kladno, but he would probably still like to be on the ice during the next season. However, we will have to wait a bit longer to find out what will happen officially with the future of the best Czech forward.
