After an acclimatisation period of a couple of months, plus the arrival of Xabi Alonso, Adam Hložek finally had a relatively successful opening season in the Bundesliga. He scored 5 goals and added 3 assists in 29 league games, scored once in the DFB Pokal and added 1+2 in the Europa League.
Before the new season, Hložek lost a bit of competition when Moussa Diaby left for Aston Villa, moreover Callum Hudson-Odoi returned to Chelsea after the end of his loan spell.
Leverkusen, however, brought in striker Victor Boniface after a great season at Belgian side Royale Union SG, with proven name Jonas Hofmann on the wing from Mönchengladbach.
In the first competitive match in which Werkself faced Teutonia Ottensen, Hložek did not end up in the starting line-up. The Spanish coach put Adli and Hofmann on the wings, club gem Florian Wirtz played on the sub, and reinforcement Boniface played on the tip.
Hložek replaced Wirtz in the 70th minute at 5:0 and immediately gave Xabi Alonso a reason to start in the starting line-up next time. Just five minutes after coming on the pitch, he received the ball from Andrich just outside the box, turned and fired it into the net.
Six minutes later, he made his mark again when he passed to Hofmann for the goal. But Hložek wasn’t done yet, in the 90th minute he completed the final 8:0 with his second goal.
Bayer Leverkusen advanced to the 1/16 final without any problems. Leverkusen will face RB Leipzig in the first league round next week.
