The new season in France is knocking on the door and PSG is still sorting out the squad. The league starts this weekend and the team from Paris is trying to get rid of several players. The new coach Luis Enrique has unpleasant worries. In addition, the situation surrounding Kylian Mbappé is still unresolved.
French Ligue 1 kicks off on Friday night, when Nice and Lille face off in an attractive duel. On Saturday, the defending champions will also be in action. PSG will welcome Lorient, the tenth-placed team last season.
But what line-up will they field? That is the question. The Parisians are still deciding on their squad for the season. All summer, the future of the club’s biggest star has been under discussion. Kylian Mbappé has a contract until the end of the season, he refuses to extend it and PSG doesn’t want to let him go for free.
PSG are even so desperate that they have accepted an offer from Saudi Arabia. A very generous one of course, it certainly wouldn’t hurt the club financially. But Mbappé has refused to spend a year away from Europe, even at the cost of being out of the squad in Paris for a whole season.
On Wednesday, a media day took place in the French capital, during which there were medallion shoots, team photos and media interactions. Mbappé was not present, suggesting that he is not really counted on at PSG.
The French gem is also facing pressure from political representatives. Almost nobody in France likes the situation. After all, the European Championships are a year away and for the national team captain not to play for a year? Unpleasant.
Apart from Mbappé, however, the future of several other players is being discussed. Neymar, who has reportedly been given permission to leave, and Marco Verratti, who is interested in Saudi Arabia, did not attend the media day.
What will happen to Neymar? There is speculation of an unlikely return to Barcelona, interest from Chelsea, Saudi Arabia, a move to the MLS or a return to Brazil.
Besides, still sports manager Luis Campos and coach Luis Enrique have communicated with Hugo Ekitique, Renato Sanches or Juan Bernat. All of them should have been informed that they were not counted on.
