Erik ten Hag is doing his best to prepare his team for the new season. Manchester United have a packed pre-season schedule and on Saturday they played their seventh pre-season game.
It is impossible to say that the Red Devils are in an ideal frame of mind. In the match against the increasingly famous Wrexham, the Dutch strategist deployed youngsters, so the loss did not matter so much.
But then came defeats to Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Against the Spanish team’s fluffy selection, the loss was acceptable, but the defeat to Dortmund, which has nowhere near the financial possibilities, was a bit of a letdown. Still, this is only a preparation.
The game against Lens of France was not started too well by the English team either. Chelsea fans must have gloated, especially in the 14th minute of the match, when Mason Mount smilingly failed to deal with a great chance.
The English midfielder received a pass in front of a mostly empty net and was in the perfect position to score. But he basically didn’t even get a shot off.
Just a few minutes later, Manchester United’s new goalkeeper André Onana was fishing the ball out of the net after a shot from the middle of the park. But he was not sorry.
The Red Devils were able to rally at the start of the second half and by the 59th minute it was 3-1 to the English side. Marcus Rashford, Antony and Casemiro scored.
