Alcaraz made millions of Spaniards happy with his triumph at Wimbledon this year
He dethroned the turf legend on Centre Court at London’s All England Club. He not only fulfilled a childhood dream but also made millions of sports fans in Spain happy. But one more thing.
At just twenty years old, he joined the ranks of tennis legends by winning the second Grand Slam title of his career. This one, however, is all the more precious because he won it against a legend who has triumphed at Wimbledon a total of seven times.
Carlos Alcaraz continues to amaze the tennis world. What he failed to do due to full-body cramps at the recent French Open, he has now made up for in the final at this year’s Wimbledon.
During his crazy five-set war with Novak Djokovic, the young Spaniard showed world-class tennis and some of his shots seemed out of this world. He managed to win the Grand Slam title at Wimbledon after winning the US Open last year.
Alcaraz’s victory was watched from the stands by King Philip VI of Spain and millions of Spaniards in front of their TV screens celebrating their hero’s triumph. But one of them cheered a little more than the others.
But his countryman, UFC fighter Ilia Topuria, was a little happier
Still undefeated Spanish MMA fighter Ilia Topuria, who is rising up the UFC’s featherweight division, had $50,000 wagered on the final Wimbledon duel.
Alcaraz earned him nearly four times the amount wagered with his victory, specifically his winning ticket represented a payout of $237,500. “Mr. Carlitos, congratulations,” he wrote on his social networks after his compatriot’s win.
“Many people discouraged me to cancel my bet, but because I did it with great faith, I never doubted it. Congratulations, you deserve it,” he revealed that many of his friends discouraged him from posting the ticket. But he was definitely right not to listen to them.
