Memorable moments: Bayern put Barcelona to a historic shame by scoring eight goals

It was supposed to be an even Champions League quarter-final between two giants, but it turned into a historic embarrassment. Bayern Munich pulverised Barcelona by eight goals, causing a huge uproar in Catalonia.

The coronavirus in 2020 has made a big impact on football competitions. The Champions League had to be suspended in the spring and in order to finish it, UEFA had to resort to a drastic solution.

In August, when new seasons normally start, a mini-tournament of the remaining quarter-finals was played in Portugal. Barcelona took on Bayern, a match that promised to be a great spectacle.

And it did come, right from the start of the game. In the fourth minute Thomas Müller, who traditionally has a grudge against Barcelona, opened the scoring.

However, the Blaugranas added to the wild start by equalizing after an offensive action thanks to an own goal by David Alaba. But that was all from the Catalans in the first half.

Ivan Perisic gave the Bavarians the lead back in the 21st minute, and Serge Gnabry added a third six minutes later. In the 31st minute, Müller added a second goal and the score was 4-1 to Bayern.

A small glimmer of hope came in the 57th minute when Luis Suárez reduced the score to 2:4. But that was the end of Messi and co. and from then on it was all Bayern.

In the 63rd minute, Alphonso Davies played Semedo on the left side and passed the ball to Kimmich, who increased the score to 5: 2. Eight minutes from the end, Bayern’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski came up with goal number six.

But then came the biggest embarrassment for Barcelona. Philippe Coutinho, whom Barcelona did not want and sent to Bayern on loan, also took the field for the German side during the match.

But it was the Brazilian footballer, who was not doing well at all at the Camp Nou, who scored twice against his employer in the space of four minutes to increase the final score to 8:2.

The unprecedented shame resonated throughout Spain. The sports dailies across the country were busy, Barcelona fans were rather knocking their ears off, while supporters of their rivals were enjoying the jeers.
