Demolition of Camp Nou has begun, Barcelona’s stadium is in ruins

The famous Catalan club has started construction of a new stadium. However, this is not a renovation, but a brand new stand, so the legendary old Camp Nou is going down!

The first images of the now iconic Catalan stadium have hit social media and more than one FCB fan has certainly shed a tear at the sight. After all, the arena is becoming a ruin after the Blaugranas played their last home game here just 6 weeks ago.

New construction, which will cost the club around £1.25 billion, or just under 35 billion crowns, started this week.

It was just last July when the Catalans officially confirmed the new visualisation and, in addition, gave it a start date.

The club will therefore play at least the 2023/24 season in the Olympic complex at Estadio Lluís Companys, named after the Catalan president. The complex, among other things, hosted the 1992 Olympic Games and is just over 6 kilometres from the old Camp Nou.

In addition, the club has agreed with the city’s authorities to spend over half a billion to improve the infrastructure around the Olympic complex.

Social networks show videos of the demolition of FC Barcelona’s iconic sanctuary. The scenery must be hard for fans to look at.

The new stadium will have a higher spectator capacity. This moves from the original 99,354 to a whopping 105,000 seats.

The construction also includes a sloping roof with solar panels. Among other things, this will be able to retain rainwater, which will continue to be used to keep the green grass in shape.

The Catalan stand also has a new name. From the now legendary name “Camp Nou” to “Spotify Camp Nou” as part of a sponsorship deal with the most famous music playback platform.

Many Barcelona fans feel grateful that they still got to see the iconic stand before it was demolished. A similar fate awaits Milan’s San Siro.
