Robbie Lawler has had the last fight of his career. He revealed his plans before that, which got him some special attention. Already, his arrival has been a high-profile event. It was a question of how he would do in the fight. And once again, he didn’t disappoint!
One of the greatest legends in UFC history said goodbye to his career on Saturday night. Robbie Lawler was finishing the prelims card at the number 290 gala, his opponent was the nearly a decade younger Niko Price.
The forty-one year old veteran didn’t come in as the favorite, but it didn’t show in the match. Or rather, there wasn’t even time to let it show. Ruthless, meaning ruthless, lived up to his nickname in style.
For after 38 seconds, Lawler was celebrating the victory, Price was on the ground dreaming of a better tomorrow. While Lawler managed to land 8 punches, his opponent only managed to land twice.
In recent years, however, Lawler hasn’t shined as much as he has in the past. But no matter who he faced in the cage, he never gave a downright bad performance. Despite his advanced age and the fact that his best years were behind him, he wasn’t afraid of any challenge.
He had won two of his previous eight fights, beating other legends, namely Nick Diaz and Donald Cerrone. But the losses? Nothing to be ashamed of – Bryan Barbarena (TKO), Neil Magny (on points), Colby Covington (on points), Ben Askren (submission), Rafael dos Anjos (on points) and current champion Tyron Woodley (TKO).
So he was still taking the big names. Perhaps that’s why he’s not necessarily appreciated as much as he deserves by newer fans. But he’s had a 22-year career. He made his first appearance in the UFC at number 37 in 2002.
Lawler was previously welterweight champion as well. He became the champion in 2014. In addition, he is still the only fighter who has won the award for the best fight of the year three times in a row (2014, 2015 and 2016) at the respected MMA Fighting and Sherdog sites.
