Delayed, missing the touchline and the big whitewash. In Brazil, rain won over football
A cancelled game due to bad weather or fan vandalism, it happens sometimes. But for the main referees to not let the match be played because of missing lines is a great rarity. That’s exactly what happened in Brazil’s third league on Monday.
A cancelled game due to bad weather or fan vandalism, it happens sometimes. But for the main referees to not let the match be played because of missing lines is a great rarity. That’s exactly what happened in Brazil’s third league on Monday.
It was a classic Serie C match between home side CS Alagoano and Aparecidense. The players listened to the anthems, but then noticed that there were no white lines on the pitch. The heavy rain was to blame, which had erased them.
Head referee Belence Alves first addressed the situation with both teams for a quarter of an hour. The match was postponed by half an hour, then by another half an hour. In the meantime, CS Alagoano’s staff hand-lined the pitch.
However, it was no use as the rain was against and continued to destroy the pitch. After an hour and a quarter, referee Alves postponed the game due to an unplayable pitch.
The groundsman did not give up and prepared the pitch again at night. Once again the rain caught up with him and ruined his work. A replacement date was set for Wednesday at 1am Czech time and this time the match did indeed take place.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw after two goals in the first half. After nine rounds played, the home team CSA is in tenth place in the 20-team table, while Aparecidense is last.
A similar situation occurred seven years ago. Montreal and Toronto faced each other in the MLS Eastern Conference Final, with the media promoting the match, despite the glory of the players on both sides, as a clash between Sebastian Giovinco and Didier Drogba.
However, the final was delayed by 40 minutes because the big whitewash was not lined up for some unfathomable reason. The 61,000 fans in the audience had to wait for the grand final due to a very unusual inconvenience.
