German international and frequent Manchester City captain Ilkay Gündogan is moving! The new employer of the creative midfielder is the Catalan giant FC Barcelona!
Formerly a talent of Borussia Dortmund, then a long-time mainstay of England’s Manchester City, this is what the most successful part of German Ilkay Gündogan’s career looks like so far. And it’s taking other directions.
The German midfielder’s brand new employer is FC Barcelona, who have been bidding for the player for some time now. Among other things, Gündogan himself has let it be known that he would love to head to Catalonia.
The news of the fresh transfer was confirmed by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on his Twitter account. In addition to him, the German site Transfermarkt also noted the event.
The Blaugranas thus get an extremely creative link to their midfield ranks. Gündogan, especially in recent seasons in Citizens colours, has shown superior midfield acumen and the ability to stir up offensive action from virtually anything.
The German with Turkish roots will leave the Etihad Stadium as a free agent and sign for Barcelona until 2025. The contract subsequently includes an astronomical exit clause of €500 million and a possible option to extend his contract at Camp Nou until June 2026.
the 32-year-old midfielder will thus be looking for new career challenges with a big “V”, especially after last season. After completing the so-called treble with Manchester City, he has already won virtually everything there is to win at club level in Pep Guardiola’s team.
The Spanish top flight will thus be Gündogan’s debut and a chance to lift another quantum of valuable trophies above his head.
This is the first big transfer of this transfer window for the Catalans and it may be far from the last. This is true despite the current economic problems the club is facing, which of course complicates the whole market situation considerably.
