Belgium has changed its coach after a failed World Cup, Domenico Tedesco has been appointed. But it can’t be said that he could solve the problems in the team. There were already rifts between the players during the championship, but now a direct dispute between the coach and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is being resolved.

At the World Cup, the Belgians already finished in the preliminary group, a team full of interesting players disappointed with their performances and team (in)cohesion. It was only logical that a change of coach was made. It was expected that this might improve the atmosphere in the cabin.

But it obviously didn’t happen. Domenico Tedesco got into a dispute with one of his biggest stars. In the current national team window, Belgium played Austria (1: 1) and will challenge Estonia on Tuesday night.

Romelu Lukaku was captain against Austria, while Thibaut Courtois had the armband on his left arm against Estonia. However, the Real Madrid goalkeeper left the team and coach Tedesco commented on it, stirring up conflict.

“Everyone agreed that Romelu would be captain against Austria and Thibaut against Estonia. But after the game Thibaut suddenly wanted to talk to me, he said he was going home because he was disappointed and felt insulted,” Goal quoted Tedesco as saying.

The Italian coach revealed that he was shocked by Courtois’ move, as he recognizes him not only as the best goalkeeper in the world, but also as a good person who has tried to give him the recognition he deserves.

The fact that he addressed the matter publicly, however, did not please the Real Madrid star. “I was surprised. It wasn’t the first time we’ve addressed issues regarding the cabin. But it’s the first time someone has said it publicly. I am really disappointed and I want to make it clear that his statement does not correspond to reality,” the Belgian expressed on social media.

Courtois wanted Tedesco to explain and make a concrete decision for the sake of avoiding situations that were to damage the Belgium selection in the past. According to him, being captain of the national team is not a whim or a random decision.

One of the best goalkeepers on the planet also communicated with Lukaku to clarify the whole situation. Courtois then justified his departure from the team by undergoing a check-up for a problem with his right knee, and the whole matter was said to have been discussed with the medical team at Real Madrid, who were in contact with the doctors at the national team.

Tedesco, however, denied Courtois’ version: ‘I wish I could say he left the team because of an injury, but I can’t lie. I always try to protect the players, but in this situation it’s impossible. I tried to persuade him to hold out for two more days.”
