Eden Hazard has had an unsuccessful and more or less wasted year at Real Madrid. He will be a free agent from the summer and the media is discussing his future. At 32, his career is coming to an end, yet the Belgian believes he still has something to offer.
In the summer of 2019, a big transfer took place on the route from Chelsea to Real Madrid. Eden Hazard, one of the best footballers in the world at the time, left England for Spain for 115 million euros.
He was expected to help fill the hole left by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and be the new driving force in the quest for great success. But it never happened. The Belgian star’s stint at the Santiago Bernabeu fell through.
Injuries were frequent, there was talk of a not-so-exemplary lifestyle, Hazard didn’t come across form too often either. When he did jump into the game, he was nowhere near the player he was in a Blues jersey.
He can’t grumble about the number of trophies he won, he won the Champions League, became Spanish champion twice, he can also boast of winning the Club World Cup or the European Super Cup. But he didn’t have a big part in it.
This season was his last at Real Madrid, despite the fact that he was supposed to have one more year on his contract. He agreed with the club to terminate his contract. He played 76 games for the club with 7 goals and 12 assists.
What’s next? That’s the question. Foreign media speculated about a return to Belgium, specifically to RWD Molenbeek, the team of his younger brother Kylian, who has now been promoted to the top flight.
Hazard has also been linked with a return to Lille, leaving for the United States. A possible end to his career was also in the cards. But at 32 years old, the until recently outstanding and respected footballer is not thinking about that.
“I don’t know what will happen. After these three complicated years, I want to spend time with my family, enjoy my holidays. But I can assure you that I can still be a professional footballer. My body can handle it. Moreover, I have been resting for three years,” Hazard told Marca.
He certainly didn’t impress Real Madrid fans with his words. After all, Hazard’s approach to training was also questioned during his time at the club. Let’s hope, however, that he will still show us his impressive footballing skills.
