It was the best result for Karolina Muchová at Grand Slams in her career so far. Until then, her biggest success was the semi-final at the Australian Open in 2021, where she fell short to American Jennifer Brady.
The French Open draw was not favourable for the Olomouc native. In the first round, she was defeated by Maria Sakkari of Greece. However, she defeated the tournament’s number eight in an evenly matched duel after more than two hours of battle 7::6 and 7::5.
Unexpected complications came for Muchova in the second round. Nadia Podorska gave a great performance and even gave her Czech opponent a canary in the second set. The third set had to be decided, in which Muchová defeated her opponent 6:3.
In the third round, the tennis player from Hana came up against Beguová, with whom she had a negative match record of 0:2. But that changed in France, as Muchová won 6:3 and 6:2 after a dominant performance.
Two duels with opponents from Russia followed. First, the 26-year-old defeated the surprise of the tournament, Avenesyanova, and then she found a way to beat the returning Pavlyuchenkova. She did not lose a set in these duels.
Then it was the turn of the semi-finals, where the seeded number two Aryna Sabalenka was waiting. In the third set, the Belarusian had a match point at 5:2, but she was unable to take advantage of it. Mukhova won after 7::6, 6::7 and 7::5.
The final also offered a great spectacle to the spectators present. However, it was the world number one Iga Swiatek, who won Roland Garros for the third time in a row, who was the most joyful. She won the final 6:2, 5:7 and 6:4. However, Muchova was the only tennis player to win at least a set against the Pole.
And how much did the owner of one WTA title earn with her final appearance. Thanks to her great performance she earned 1,150,000 euros, just like the defeated finalist in the men’s section Casper Ruud.
This is more than 27 million Czech crowns. If she had won the final, she would have earned twice as much. But these amounts are before taxes.
