The Vegas Golden Knights have won the Stanley Cup for the first time in their franchise history, and they are obviously enjoying it. This is how they celebrated with their fans right on the streets of the city.
The team from Las Vegas made its first appearance in the NHL in 2017, and its owner Bill Foley proudly declared when he joined the best hockey league in the world that he wanted to win the Stanley Cup within six years.
And he did. Vegas absolutely nailed the expansion draft, with the Golden Knights nearly fulfilling their vision in their first year.
That seems unbelievable by today’s standards. However, it didn’t work out in the Stanley Cup Finals when the Golden Knights lost to the Washington Capitals 1:4 in the playoffs.
In the 2018-19 season, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, and a season later they reached the Western Conference Finals. But they fell short to Dallas, who then lost to Tampa Bay in the finals. The Vegas players repeated the conference finals in the 2020/21 season.
But once again, they failed to advance, falling to Montreal in six games. And their opponent didn’t win the Cup either, as the Canadiens lost to Tampa Bay in the Stanley Cup Final.
Ironically, last year the Golden Knights failed to make the playoffs for the first time in their short history, but this year they finally did. And the players are having a blast, celebrating with the fans on the streets of Las Vegas.
A well-deserved championship
The Golden Knights made it through this year’s playoffs without any major problems. In almost every series, they showed not so much attractive hockey, but rather a truly mature performance, which finally led them to the coveted championship.
Bruce Cassidy’s charges, especially in the second half of the playoffs, played what they needed to play. They eliminated Winnipeg in the first round of the NHL playoffs (4: 1), and in the second round they were not even able to beat Edmonton and Connor McDavid (4: 2).
In the Western Conference Finals, the Golden Knights returned the result from the previous years to Dallas and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals after a six-game series. Florida simply couldn’t keep up with Vegas (4: 1).
