A review of Chelsea’s winter transfers, which paid 329 million euros for new signings. Can Potter cope with such a glut of players?

London’s Chelsea were clearly the most active team in the transfer market in January as far as all the European giants were concerned, spending just over 329 million euros. So American owner Todd Boehly has dug pretty deep into his wallet during his two transfer seasons as Blues owner. If we include the summer spending, we arrive at 611 million euros.

Chelsea thus spent more money in January than the Spanish, Italian, French and German leagues combined. We break down the amounts spent on transfers in detail in this article.

Benoît Badiashile

The left-footed French international stopper, who is a Monaco offspring from where he also came to Chelsea for €38 million, has signed a contract with the Blues until 2030.

His main strength should be his head game, which matches his 194 centimetres, he should also be an asset to his new team thanks to his excellent footwork. In short, he is a modern day/future defender and it will certainly be interesting to watch his development.

He even managed to bench the experienced Senegalese Kalidou Koulibaly in Chelsea’s first few games and hasn’t had to pull the ball out of his own net once so far. In the future, it can be assumed that he could form a solid stopper duo with Wesley Fofana, but at the moment he can improve alongside, for example, the very experienced Thiago Silva.

João Félix

One of the most expensive loan signings in Premier League history. Chelsea will pay €11 million for the Portuguese striker and that’s only until the end of the currently played season.

One thing is for sure though, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have a great relationship for a long time, so a possible transfer shouldn’t be a problem. He is a very good striker, but he has never got over the 10 goals per season mark in the Spanish La Liga.

It should be noted, however, that he has played in a defensive Atlético, where many offensive players are not comfortable. Thus, his strengths could stand out much more at Chelsea when creating goals. However, the competition will be huge!

Mykhaylo Mudryk

A transfer saga that will not be easily forgotten by a football fan who likes to follow transfers. The fast-footed Ukrainian footballer, who until now has been wearing the jersey of Shakhtar Donetsk, has been pushing for a transfer to a rival from London, i.e. Arsenal.

Mudryk was eager for a move to the Gunners, but Chelsea came up with a better offer and a better contract than Arsenal, which made neither side shy of a move to Stamford Bridge.

So the Blues got a new signing for €70 million + another €30 million in potential bonuses. On top of that he signed a record 8 year contract. He drew the most attention in the Champions League regular season, where he managed to score 3 goals in 6 games and assisted 2 more.

Enzo Fernandez

However, all these three big signings were pocketed at the last minute by the recent Qatar World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez, for whom Chelsea paid Benfica 121 million euros. He only moved to Benfica last summer for 14 million euros, which River Plate paid for him.

However, his performances for the national team were certainly not random, as he has played 29 games for the Portuguese side so far this season, scoring 4 times and assisting his teammates 7 times. A great performance for a player who has quite a few defensive assignments. However, he will face stiff competition at Stamford Bridge.

What can Chelsea achieve this season?

Chelsea have already knocked Manchester City out of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. In the Premier League, the Blues are currently in 10th place, 21 points behind leaders Arsenal and 10 points behind 4th place held by Manchester United.

So there is a definite chance to qualify for the millionaire’s competition. However, Chelsea can qualify for next year’s competition if they win the play-offs, in which they will first face Borussia Dortmund.

Coach Potter has a really wide and very good team, but it may also take some time for everything to fall into place. The second thing will be how he can coach all these star players when in most cases they have come to Stamford Bridge to play.

This, in my opinion, will be the biggest challenge for the English coach, who is certainly not doing as expected so far, having won only 9 of the 21 games he has coached.
