Will Chelsea continue to spend furiously in the summer? Coach Potter defends expensive transfers. When did he hear about Fernandez’s arrival?
Chelsea have had a very expensive winter transfer window and have faced a lot of criticism and indeed ridicule for it. Many experts felt that the Blues were throwing big money around without thought or concept. Will something similar happen again in the summer?
Chelsea have had a very expensive winter transfer window and have faced a lot of criticism and indeed ridicule for it. Many experts felt that the Blues were throwing big money around without thought or concept. Will something similar happen again in the summer?
Chelsea have had two transfer seasons under new owners and it cannot be said that they are afraid to spend. In fact, they have brought in 18 players for over £600m. In the winter transfer window, they were the biggest spenders.
During January, players arrived at Stamford Bridge for a total of £323 million, having even broken the league record with the arrival of Enzo Fernandez, who arrived from Benfica for £106 million.
This leaves the Blues facing criticism for further negatively influencing and devaluing the market. Not to mention the fact that some arrivals don’t even make sense to the experts. This has led to many funny collages or animated clips designed to mock the new owners.
Chelsea, however, are not in a good situation this season. After the arrival of Graham Potter as coach, it seemed that everything would turn for the better, but after a quick rise came a quick fall. And not and not fully stop it.
The new winter signings should help. The London club are now 10th in the Premier League table, a position that guarantees the Champions League is not quite close.
In any case, the question of what Chelsea will do in the summer has immediately come up. Will there be a repeat of the crazy winter transfer window? Not according to coach Potter.
“I don’t think we’ll have similar spending in the summer. There has been a regeneration of the squad and I think we have to say that the next transfer window will be different from our side. That’s for sure,” Goal quotes the Blues coach as saying.
“We have tried to be creative. We have tried to invest in our present as well as our future. We are in a position where we always want to improve. That is our ambition. I don’t agree with the criticism, but I can understand the perspective and I understand it,” he defends Chelsea’s transfer policy.
And what position does he actually have in transfers? He says he is actually barely involved in the negotiations and concentrates mainly on training and preparing his team.
He later suggested that he could do nothing to change things. Then when he found out that the aforementioned Fernandez was brought into his team, he was ecstatic. However, he knew nothing about his signing until it was announced.
