Will Citizens problems help Real Madrid? The Spanish big club could take advantage of the situation to acquire Haaland
The latest news from the Premier League has rocked the world. Manchester City are facing accusations of breaching financial fair-play and if this proves to be true, the Citizens are facing a major exodus of stars. And that’s what Real Madrid are waiting for.
The latest news from the Premier League has rocked the world. Manchester City are facing accusations of breaching financial fair-play and if this proves to be true, the Citizens are facing a major exodus of stars. And that’s what Real Madrid are waiting for.
Manchester City face not only a points deduction but, in a worse case scenario, elimination from the European Cups or even relegation to England’s sixth tier. It is virtually unthinkable that any player would remain in the squad in such a scenario.
But even if it was just a case of being knocked out of the European Cups, some stars would have already applied to leave. One of the first would probably be Erling Haaland, the Premier League’s top scorer, who is heavily in demand by Real Madrid.
Haaland himself was reportedly interested in going to Spain, but in the end, as his father stated, the Karim Benzema in the form of his life factor played a role, as well as the fact that Kylian Mbappé was to join Los Blancos. So Haaland opted for the Citizens, but certainly not for his entire career.
As Haaland’s agent Rafaela Pimienta said last week, the Norwegian midfielder has the “key to the door” at Manchester City and can leave whenever he wants. He has a buy-out clause in mind, which is expected to be €200m.
This clause would be valid from the summer of 2024, which may well be Benzema’s last year at Real Madrid, given his age (35).
However, the whole “Operation Haaland” may take a quicker turn. According to Mundo Deportivo, Real are currently keeping a close eye on the Manchester City situation. Indeed, if the defending Premier League champions are hit with any major sanctions, it is hard to imagine Haaland staying at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland has already scored 25 goals in the Premier League this season, netting four hat-tricks. He has an eight-goal lead over Harry Kane in the race for top scorer.
