Barcelona eliminated from the Cup! Team Femení penalized for fielding an ineligible player

In recent years, Spanish women’s football has been dominated by Barcelona, who also boast the best player in the world. However, the chances of a treble have been dealt a major blow as Barcelona Femení is eliminated from the Copa de la Reina.

Barcelona easily dispatched Osasuna 9-0 in the Copa de la Reina eighth round and advanced to the quarter-finals. But she only thought so.

Summer signing Geyse Ferreira intervened in the match, which cost Barcelona the competition.

the 24-year-old Brazilian footballer was red-carded last season and should have been suspended for one game in the cup, but the suspension carried over into the new season.

Only Barcelona didn’t realise this and were knocked out of the cup, while also being fined 1,000 euros. Osasuna will thus advance to the quarter-finals, Barcelona Femení has 10 days to appeal.

But its chances of overturning the case are minimal. Sevilla were also eliminated from the competition for the same offence.

Barcelona’s women’s team Copa de la Reina has dominated, winning a total of 9 trophies and holding the trophy for the last three editions. But now they will not defend it because of misconduct by the team management.

The men’s team of Real Madrid was once punished for a similar case. In 2015, Daniel Cheryshev started the duel with Cadiz, but he had seen a red card in the previous season on loan at CdR and was not allowed to start. Los Blancos were thus eliminated from the competition.
