Well, this is a huge shock. João Cancelo, one of the best full-backs in the world, leaves Manchester City for Bayern Munich. It’s supposed to be a loan deal with an option.
When João Cancelo was coming from Juventus to Manchester City, many were tapping their foreheads as to why the Old Lady were letting go of such a quality player in exchange for Danilo. And Pep Guardiola proved why he wanted the Portuguese in the team so badly.
He made him an “inverted” left-back, a player who didn’t occupy just one position. In fact, he moved from full-back to the middle of the pitch to create the play and outnumber the opponents.
Cancelo gradually became a key player for the Citizens and was often referred to as the best fullback in the world. But during this season, there were clouds in paradise.
It started at the World Cup, where Cancelo did start in Portugal’s starting lineup, but was replaced in the starting lineup by Dalot for the knockout duels. And nothing good awaited him on his return to Manchester either.
Guardiola suddenly wasn’t happy with his performances and started to implement 18-year-old Rico Lewis at right-back, whom he praises a lot, Kyle Walker is also preferred. At left-back, or in a three-defender system, Nathan Aké is again preferred.
Thus, Cancelo has spent only five of his ten games after the World Cup on the substitutes’ bench, including the last three games against Arsenal, Wolves and Tottenham. Three times he started in the starting line-up, of which he was substituted once right at half-time and went on the pitch twice in the second half.
Now renowned journalists David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano are both reporting that it was the limited time recently that swayed Canelo’s decision to leave Manchester City.
His new destination will be Bayern Munich, who have long coveted him. It should be a loan deal followed by an option.
In the next 24 hours, Cancelo is expected to undergo a medical in Munich. The shocking transfer is thus gathering pace.
