The Santiago Bernabéu may not be happy about this draw. If they already had a deadly lottery ticket like this, now they’ve made it even worse. Because of their participation in four competitions (La Liga, Champions League, Club World Cup and CdR), Real Madrid will play a match every 3 days until the end of March.
The really deadly schedule will be completed at the end of February, when Real Madrid will play Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals, Atlético Madrid in La Liga and Barcelona in the Copa del Rey in 8 days.
The fixture list is relentless for Los Blancos. Real Madrid have now had four English weeks and will go in this mode until the end of March, when the national break comes. So Benzema and co. will face a game every 3 days for the next two months.
2.2 Valencia (home)
5.2 Mallorca (away)
8.2 Club World Cup semi-finals
12.2 Club World Cup finals (?)
15.2 Elche (home)
18.2 Osasuna (away)
21.2 Liverpool (LM, away)
25.2 Atlético (home)
1.3 Barcelona (CdR, home)
5.3 Betis (away)
11.3. Espanyol (home)
15.3 Liverpool (LM, home)
19.3 Barcelona (CdR, away)
That’s Real Madrid’s schedule for the next two months. Apart from the games against Mallorca and Elche, which are among the more feasible ones, it is an extremely demanding schedule. Osasuna away is also an extremely tough game, as they are one of the best teams in La Liga at home.
The sequence of Osasuna away, Liverpool, Atlético, Barcelona, Betis is thus extremely difficult and quite possibly this is where the whole season will be decided.
Carlo Ancelotti will have to make full use of his entire squad, only Real don’t have one that wide. Players like Eden Hazard, Mariano Díaz, Alvaro Odriozola or Jesus Vallejo are just a number and unless they are really on fire, they won’t be on the pitch. So the Italian coach will have to deal with about 15 players.
