The Portuguese league is certainly not followed by as many people compared to other competitions. But those who do follow it are the scouts of the big European clubs. Countless top footballers have gone out into the world from the Portuguese league, confirming the simple model that has been established. Buy cheap and sell for crazy money.
The scouting and marketing of clubs from the Portuguese top flight is some of the most brilliant we have the opportunity to watch. One club that confirms the above is certainly Benfica Lisbon, who have already made more than one billion euros this century by selling their players.
Benfica is a club that has conquered the domestic competition on thirty-seven occasions, to which it has added twenty-six League Cup trophies. In both cases, this is a record number.
This is a clear indication that this is a top club, but for footballers it is often just a stepping stone to an even more successful career.
Anew face in the club’s ranks
Benfica have secured the services of young Norwegian footballer Andreas Schjelderup. He is an 18-year-old footballer who comes to Portugal from FC Nordsjaelland for a sum of around 14 million euros. He has scored ten goals in seventeen games this season from his position as a winger.
At any given moment, the question is certainly whether this will be another black mark and another footballer whose future appreciation and sale will pump millions into the club’s piggy bank.
A billion euros from the sale of its footballers
Benfica Lisbon has produced countless footballers for world football. The last huge transfer by the Portuguese club happened last summer when Darwin Núñez left for Liverpool for 80 million euros. The list of other footballers and their price tags is truly impressive.
Ruben Dias – 68 million euros, Joao Felix – 127 million euros, Ederson – 40 million euros, Renato Sanches – 35 million euros, Nemanja Vidic – 25 million euros, Axel Witsel – 40 million euros, Fabio Coentrato – 30 million euros and Angel Di María – 33 million euros.
Recently, Benfica managed another great transfer. Six months ago, Enzo Fernández expanded their ranks, coming for €14 million. Also thanks to Argentina’s World Cup win and his great performances, another huge transfer is in the pipeline, hovering around the €120 million mark. That is, the exercise of his exit clause.
A move to Chelsea was imminent this transfer window. However, the club’s coach, Roger Schmidt, has stated that all negotiations for a possible transfer have been put on hold.
The London club offered a sum of €85 million, but the answer was always the same. Benfica have no interest in selling the player or negotiating in any way. If interested, the club must pay the full exit clause.
