Pelé, one of the best footballers of all time and a Brazilian legend, is at the end of his battle with a colon tumour, according to several recent reports. The former footballer has reportedly stopped responding to treatment, so he has been moved to the palliative care unit at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.
Last September, Pelé was diagnosed with a colon tumour during a routine medical check-up. The tumour was removed and the Brazilian underwent several chemotherapy treatments. He stayed frequently in hospital, where doctors gradually discovered that the cancer had spread to his liver and lungs.
The former footballer was hospitalized on Tuesday due to swelling and deterioration of his heart. On Friday, his doctors came back with the news that their patient had been stabilized. Subsequently, the news came from Pelé himself.
He shared with fans on his Instagram with the news that he was in the hospital for his regular monthly visit. He expressed his thanks to everyone for their support and positive news.
Brazilian football fans also remembered Pelé during this year’s World Cup in Qatar. During one of the games, they created a special choreo wishing him a speedy recovery.
A day later, however, news went out that the famous Brazilian had stopped responding to chemotherapy. For this reason, Pelé was taken to the palliative care unit.
Palliative care is no longer concerned with treating cancer, but rather with ensuring the highest possible quality of life for the patient in their final days. So by all accounts, we will soon be saying goodbye to one of the greatest football personalities of all time.
Doctors refused to continue chemotherapy when they found that the patient’s body was not responding to it. There’s been no improvement, so they don’t give him much chance of survival. But of course, no one has revealed how much time Pelé has left.
Pelé celebrated his 82nd birthday this year. He spent most of his career with Brazilian side Santos, with whom he won the league six times, the Liberators Cup twice and the Intercontinental Cup once. He became the first footballer to win three World Cups, doing so with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
